View Menu

The Search and Replace View Menu has the following items:

Open with Associated Viewer: This opens the current file in the Search Results (if any) using the associated viewer (program). If no viewer is associated with that file extension, the default viewer, configurable in General Options, is used (default is NOTEPAD.EXE). The file to open is determined by the focus in the Search Results list, which is marked by a thin rectangle or a highlight. If the Search Results list contains nothing, this item is not available. If the file is in a ZIP file, it is extracted to a subdirectory of the path specified in Search Options. If you edit a file that was in a ZIP, you must update the original ZIP file using your ZIP utility since ZIP files are NOT automatically updated. See Product Information for details about Directory Toolkit for Windows 95/NT, our multipurpose file and directory utility with built-in ZIP functions.

Open with Default Viewer: This opens the current file in the Search Results (if any) using the Search and Replace default viewer, configurable in General Options. NOTEPAD.EXE is used if no default viewer has been defined. The file to open is determined by the focus in the Search Results list, which is marked by a thin rectangle or a highlight. The Default Viewer menu item is not available if the Search Results list is empty. If the file is in a ZIP file, it is extracted to a subdirectory of the path specified in Search Options. If you edit a file contained in a ZIP you must update the original ZIP using your ZIP utility as ZIP files are NOT automatically updated.

The command line for the Search and Replace Default Viewer will pass the keywords, %line% and %path%, for the line number of the highlighted found string in the Search Results list and the complete path to the file containing that string. These keywords can be useful if your viewer supports command line switches to open a file at a specific line number. For example, if your viewer supports specification of a line number, you would make a setting under the “If no association use:” field in General Options of something like, “C:\Windows\SuperView.exe %path%(%line%)” (no quotes) to launch “SuperView” and move automatically to the line containing the string highlighted in the Search & Replace Results list. Consult the documentation for your viewer or editor for details on command line syntax. Note: If the filename itself is highlighted in the Search Results list, a value of 1 is passed for %line%.

Note: Search and Replace automatically quotes %path% when passing that data so do not supply your own quote characters. If your external editor has trouble parsing quoted file names, try adding quote characters around the entire command line string.

Open with…: This opens the current file in the Search Results (if any) using a viewer of your choice. A Select Viewer dialog allows you to select the viewer to use. The file to open is determined by the focus in the Search Results list, which is marked by a thin rectangle or a highlight. This item is not available if the Search Results list contains is empty. If the file is in a ZIP file, it is extracted to a subdirectory of the path specified in the Search Options tab. If you edit a file that was in a ZIP, you must update the original ZIP using your ZIP utility since ZIP files are NOT automatically updated. If you need a ZIP utility, please try our program, Directory Toolkit.

Context: Select this to view the current line in the Search Results (if any) and several lines before and after it using the Search and Replace internal context viewer. The file to open is determined by the focus in the Search Results list, which is marked by a thin rectangle or a highlight. This item is not available if the Search Results list is empty or if the focus on a filename line. Note that the Search and Replace context viewer displays text only. However, Search & Replace automatically detects binary files and launches our freeware application, HexView for Windows 95/NT, in order to view the context of binary files. See Product Information for details on HexView. Finally, note that if the results context is a file inside a ZIP file, it is extracted to a subdirectory of the path specified in Search Options. If you edit it, you must update the original ZIP using your ZIP utility since ZIP files are NOT automatically updated. See the View Context dialog for more information about viewing the context of search finds.

Note: When the focus (highlight) in the Search Results list is on a found string, double clicking with your mouse will also activate the context viewer. For the Win95/NT version of Search & Replace (SR32), the Enter key also activates the context viewer.
